- State champions (playoff)
- 10-1 with five shutouts
The 1971 team was 10-1 with five shutouts and won the third straight state playoff championship. That team had the distinction of being the only one in the seven years not to win the Sunflower League championship; that title went to Shawnee Mission South, which beat North 21-19 in the final game of the regular season.
In the state semi-final game, North dominated Wichita South, 28-7. In the state title game with Shawnee Mission West, North led 9-0 late in the game. West scored to make it 9-6 and then recovered the on-side kick. With 1 second remaining, West threw a Hail Mary 63-yard pass for a touchdown, but it was called back because of an ineligible receiver downfield. North survived and won its third consecutive playoff championship.
Todd Morgan was the star, rushing for 1,212 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning high school All-America honors. For his career, Morgan had 2,207 yards rushing on 334 carries for a 6.5 yard average; 2,461 yards of total offense; and 134 points with 22 touchdowns and one 2-point conversion. He also had the distinction of playing on the first three state championship teams determined by playoffs, and is one of the few players ever to play for three state champions.
Morgan’s supporting cast included all-stars Paul Miller at center, Dave Lawson at guard, and Bob Henry at quarterback, Chris Paraghamian at fullback, Lance Kincaid at slot back and defensive back, and kicker/reserve quarterback Bob Swift.
