Many believe the 1970 team is one of the best high school teams in Kansas history. The team was 10-0 and won the second playoff championship by shutting out Wichita North, 28-0. The 1970 team averaged 39.9 points, while allowing 8.2 points, shutting out all 10 opponents in the first quarter. The team amassed 4,268 yards of offense in the 10 games, while allowing 1,725.
It was a senior-dominated team. Fullback Dave Specht rushed for 1,155 yards on 108 carries for a 10.7 average; scored 18 touchdowns; and was named a high school All-America. For his career, Specht rushed for 1,990 yards on 252 carries for a 7.9 yard average, with 18 touchdowns and one 2-point conversion.
Quarterback Mike Rome completed 52 of 88 passes (59 percent) with six touchdowns and, incredibly, only one interception. The late Mark Gaul caught 18 passes, six for touchdowns from his tight end position. Tackle Larry Hall also was a placekicker, hitting 40 of 46 extra points and one field goal.
Center Larry Peck, lineman Dean Byrom, and receivers Mike Regnier and Kent Yeager also played key roles. Plus, the team got significant help from starting junior halfback Todd Morgan, who rushed for 795 yards and 12 touchdowns.
