- Sunflower League champion
- 8-1-1 with four shutouts
- Held opponents scoreless in first quarter
The 1968 team was 8-1-1 and won the Sunflower League championship, despite a 20-20 tie with Washington High School. The state championship, determined by polls for the final year, came down to the showdown game with Lawrence, which North lost, 21-7. The 1968 team suffered from the fact that the 1967 team was loaded with seniors so juniors had been deprived from significant playing time.
The team was led by senior Steve Hantla, younger brother of Mark, who wreaked havoc on offenses from his defensive guard position. Other seniors also played significant roles: end Bob Sander, tackle Mike O’Leary, center Don Wendt, halfback Steve Twibell, and quarterback Dave Pfanmiller, younger brother of Bob, a senior on the 1965 team. The Pfanmillers were one of several brother combinations during this era, among them the Burkindine brothers, the Hantla brothers, the Hayes brothers, and the Miller brothers.
